Actress Cate Blanchett called for an instant ceasefire in Gaza while addressing the European Union parliament in Brussels on Wednesday.
She also pushed for open borders, allowing third-world migrants to freely enter the Western countries of their preference.
The two-time Oscar winner also condemned individuals who “see walls and barbed wire fences as a solution to the world’s 36.4 million refugees.”
Cate Blanchett made an appearance at the EU parliament in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR.
Blanchett started her speech by restating the UNHCR’s call for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza and the “immediate release of all civilians held hostage.”
The actress did not explicitly reference Hamas or the terrorist group’s October 7 attack on Israelis, which triggered the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
She then transitioned to the topic of widespread illegal immigration, urging EU members to increase their support for “refugees” and encouraging countries to “focus on their protection and not on fortifying borders.”
“You have to understand that no one puts their children in a boat unless water is safer than the land,” Blanchett said.
During her speech, Blanchett criticized individuals who “see walls and barbed wire fences as a solution to the world’s 36.4 million refugees.”
She also criticized what she referred to as “harmful policies of externalization,”— an apparent reference to placing migrants in holding facilities, sometimes on islands away from the mainland.
As previously reported, Blanchett was among several Hollywood stars who recently signed an open letter calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
A lot of people think that a ceasefire would simply give Hamas the opportunity to re-arm and strengthen the terrorist group to achieve its declared goal of erasing Israel from the map.
